COVA Reflection & Application

I first realized that I genuinely had a choice, ownership, and voice through authentic assignments during my 5305: Disruptive Innovation in Tech course. The very first assignment was to create an innovation proposal, and to be honest, it was overwhelming. I felt completely lost and unsure of how to proceed. It was a new and unfamiliar experience to have the freedom to choose and design my learning path. I wondered if I was even ready for this program.

Fortunately, I had supportive classmates and Dr. Harapnuik to guide me. After some discussions, I decided to focus my innovation proposal on implementing student e-portfolios on my campus. Even with this direction, I still felt unprepared and questioned whether I could succeed. However, in 5302: Concepts of Educational Tech, the first assignment and videos emphasized the importance of adopting a growth mindset. This was a game-changer for me. To truly succeed, I realized I needed to shift from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset.

While learning and trying to change my own mindset, taking control of my voice and tailoring my work to my organization was daunting. But the assignments pushed me out of my comfort zone and compelled me to dive deep into understanding my organization's needs. This exploration revealed how e-portfolios could significantly benefit my students.

At first, I had mixed feelings about promoting change within my organization. My fixed mindset and fear of resistance held me back. But as I developed and implemented my innovation plan, I grew more confident in my ability to lead change. The resources and strategies I learned, such as the Influencer Strategy, Installing 4DX, and self-differentiated leadership, were crucial in this journey.

My innovation plan became a genuine effort to improve student achievements by providing them with a digital platform to showcase their progress. Collaborating with my colleagues to brainstorm ideas and address challenges was incredibly valuable.

The COVA approach and Creating Significant Learning Environments (CSLE) resonated deeply with my learning philosophy. They emphasize learner autonomy, choice, voice, and student-centered methodologies—key components in

developing critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and lifelong learning habits. As I near the end of the ADL program, my perspective on learning and my philosophy have evolved significantly. COVA and CSLE have equipped me with the tools to create an environment where students can become self-directed and lifelong learners. Ultimately, I plan to continue to use the knowledge that I have gained and apply them in my classroom to further enhance students learning environment and outcomes.

Applying the COVA Approach to Creating Significant Learning Environments

Knowing what you know now about the COVA approach how will you plan to use the COVA approach to create significant learning environments in your organization?

Knowing what I now know about the COVA approach, I plan to integrate it into my organization by designing learning experiences that prioritize student choice, ownership, voice, and authenticity. I'll begin by using choice boards to allow more flexibility and options for students to demonstrate their learning. This includes incorporating project-based learning and real-world problem-solving activities that give students the choice to direct their learning. I will also ensure that assessments are meaningful and reflect students' understanding and application of concepts in real-world contexts. Additionally, professional development or informational flyers for teachers will focus on understanding and implementing the COVA approach, this will be an introduction to COVA as many may have not been exposed to it.

How will you give your learners choice ownership and voice through authentic assignments?

To give learners choice, ownership, and voice through authentic assignments, I will design projects and assignments that allow students to choose their topics, methods of exploration, and ways of demonstrating their understanding. For example, create a choice board assignment for TEKS 7.6C (Math): Represent solutions for one-variable, two-step equations and inequalities on number lines. By providing options and encouraging creativity, students will feel more invested in their learning. Additionally, regular feedback sessions and student-led conferences will give learners the opportunity to discuss their progress and take ownership of their learning journey.

How will you prepare your learners and colleagues for the COVA approach and CSLE?

To prepare learners and colleagues for the COVA approach and CSLE, I will start with a mini-series of training and informational sessions that introduce the principles and benefits of these methods. For students, I will implement introductory activities that gradually build their comfort with making choices and taking ownership of their learning. For colleagues, I will offer professional development sessions focused on the COVA approach, including practical strategies for incorporating it into their teaching. Especially providing ongoing support (Principle 2 of the 5 principles of effective professional learning), such as peer coaching and collaborative planning sessions, will be essential to ensure that both students and teachers feel confident and capable in this new learning environment. Regular reflection and feedback sessions will also be held to continuously improve our practices.

What are some challenges that you will face in using the COVA approach and CSLE?

Implementing the COVA approach and CSLE will present several challenges. One major challenge is shifting the mindset of both students and teachers who are resistance to change. This transition requires significant effort in professional development and a willingness to embrace change. To view my Influencer Strategy, click here. Another challenge is ensuring that all students, regardless of their background or learning style, are able to thrive in a more self-driven and self-motivated learning environment. This will require differentiated support and resources. Overcoming these challenges and other unforeseeable will involve clear communication of the benefits, ongoing support, and a commitment to continuous improvement and adaptation.

Reflecting on my journey through the Applied Digital Learning Program, I can confidently say that it has been nothing short of transformative, both for me as a learner and as a middle school teacher. Embracing the COVA (Choice, Ownership, Voice, and Authentic learning environments) approach and CSLE (Creating Significant Learning Environments) has profoundly impacted my teaching and leadership. This journey, its successes and challenges, has empowered me to drive meaningful change in my teaching methodology, my professional development and other educational practices on my campus. I hope to continue implementing the COVA and CSLE approaches in my classroom and further support my campus successfully implementing it.
